7. Door to Hell: Derweze, Ahal Province, Turkmenistan
Stories of the burning flames in hell kind of scared us really bad when we were kids. How scary then is it if you were told that such unending fire does exist on earth? You’ll probably consider it as the door to hell. Well it does surely exist in Derweze, Ahal Province of Turkmenistan.
In 1971, while Soviet scientists were on the search for oil, they accidentally struck a methane reserve causing the drilling platform to collapse, forming the crater and releasing dangerous gas into the air. To control the spread of the dangerous gas, they decided to set the crater on fire so as to burn off the methane, creating a Dante-esque incongruity that has remained lit for the past 40-plus years. Door to Hell is one of the most scariest places on earth.
