8. Suicide Forest in Japan
It seems there exists a forest where suicidal people prefer to end their lives-supposedly. Japan is home for this forest. The Aokigahara is a forest situated at the base of Mt. Fuji. It is said that over 500 people have gone to commit suicide there since the 1950s and is considered to be the world’s most scariest places on earth. In 2010 alone, about 247 people attempted to commit suicide here. 54 were successful. This trend can be derived from the fact that the forest is associated with demons in Japanese mythology.
Many hikers have had to mark their path using various methods to make it easier to find their way back out again owing to the density of the trees. The suicidal trend has caused concerned officials to put up signs with messages such as, “Your life is a precious gift from your parents,” and “Please consult with the police before you decide to die,” to discourage people from killing themselves.
